A mother smiling down at the newborn baby she is holding wrapped in a white blanket

The baby has already received forty gifts. She has received a lot of questions about the baby. So the useful gift for a new mom is one that's plainly, unmistakably for her — and the very best ones aren't objects at all.

Twenty-eight below, sorted by when in the first months they land, because what helps in week one is different from what helps in month three.

The first week — things that arrive done

  1. Food, cooked, in containers she doesn't have to return — The single most useful gift in the first fortnight. Soup, a tray bake, anything reheatable.
  2. A meal-delivery voucher — For the days nobody brings anything.
  3. A pre-stocked diaper caddy (opens in a new tab) — Technically for the baby, actually for her, because it means never walking upstairs for a wipe.
  4. Good coffee, and a mug that keeps it hot — Cold coffee is the defining beverage of month one. An insulated mug solves it.
  5. A water bottle with a straw (opens in a new tab) — One-handed, spill-proof, next to the feeding chair. Unglamorous and genuinely essential.
  6. An hour of holding the baby while she showers or sleeps — Offered specifically, not as "let me know if you need anything." Nobody ever lets you know.

The first month — comfort

  1. A robe she'd actually wear — Soft, washable, with pockets. Worn for six weeks straight.
  2. A very good hand cream — She is washing her hands forty times a day.
  3. Nice pajamas that open at the front — For feeding, and for the fact that she's in them until noon.
  4. A soft, oversized cardigan — The thing she reaches for at 3am.
  5. A silk pillowcase — Small, indulgent, and she'll notice.
  6. Slippers with a proper sole — She's doing laps of the house at night.
  7. A dry-shampoo and lip-balm care package — The things she's stopped buying for herself.
  8. A book that isn't about parenting — Something light. She may not read it for months; that's fine.

The months after — being a person again

  1. A massage or a haircut voucher, with childcare arranged — The childcare is the actual gift.
  2. A subscription to something that arrives — Flowers, a magazine, a box of nice snacks. Post addressed to her.
  3. A digital frame loaded remotely (opens in a new tab) — Family can send photos to it; she doesn't have to do anything.
  4. A photo book of the first months — Made by someone else, from her camera roll.
  5. A handprint or footprint kit (opens in a new tab) — For the keepsake she means to make and hasn't had a minute for.
  6. A nice notebook for the things she wants to remember — The 3am thoughts and the first words. She'll use about six pages, and those six pages will be gold.

Jewelry and keepsakes

  1. A necklace with the baby's initial or birthstone — The classic, and it works.
  2. A dated ornament with the baby's name (opens in a new tab) — Out every December for thirty years.
  3. A bracelet with the birth date engraved — Small, wearable, hers.
  4. A framed print of the birth details — Name, date, time, weight. Cheap to make, kept forever.

From her partner

  1. A whole night's sleep — Take every feed, or every settle, for one night. Nothing on this list beats it.
  2. A letter — About the birth, about her, about what you saw her do. She'll keep it.
  3. The first photo of the three of you, printed and framed — Not the one with the good lighting. The real one.
  4. Booking the thing she keeps mentioning — Whatever it is. The dinner, the friend's visit, the day out. Booked, with cover arranged.

What to skip

  • Anything that creates work — plants, kits, "you'll love this hobby"
  • Books about parenting — she's had enough advice this month
  • Anything about her body — "bounce back" gifts are a bad idea from anyone
  • Gifts for the baby disguised as gifts for her — she'll notice
  • "Let me know if you need anything" — offer a specific thing at a specific time instead

The 10-second version

Food she didn't cook, a robe she'd wear, a water bottle with a straw, and one hour where someone else holds the baby. Everything else is optional.

Buying for the other parent? Gifts for new dads follows the same rule — for him, not the baby. And for the baby, if you must: 30 baby shower gifts people actually use.

Frequently asked questions

Something for her, not the baby — the baby is already drowning in gifts. Food that arrives cooked, a proper water bottle with a straw, a very good hand cream, a robe she'd actually wear, and above all time: an hour where someone else holds the baby and she sleeps or showers.
