Ask an adult who was born in December how they felt about it as a child, and you'll usually get the same two complaints: everything arrived in one week, and the birthday got folded into Christmas.
Both are fixable, and neither costs more money. Twenty ideas below, organised around the two things that actually help — making the day feel separate, and spreading the year out.
Gifts that arrive later (the best trick)
- A subscription starting in January — Craft box, book club, science kit. The present keeps landing through the dead months.
- A class block in the new year — Swimming, football, gymnastics, music. Starts in January when nothing else is happening.
- Tickets to something in spring — A show, a match, a zoo day. Wrap the tickets; the gift is a date in April.
- A "one outing a month" voucher book — Twelve handmade vouchers, one per month. Costs almost nothing, spreads the whole year.
- A membership — Zoo, aquarium, museum. Used year-round, and it's the gift that's still giving in June.
- A summer gift, given now, opened then — A water table or garden toy, wrapped with "open when it's warm." Genuinely exciting to anticipate.
- A magazine subscription — Post with their name on it, every month. Enormous at this age.
Making the day feel like a birthday, not Christmas
- Non-festive wrapping paper — The simplest, most effective thing on this list. Birthday paper, not snowflakes.
- Birthday decorations, put up separately — Take the Christmas decorations down or move to a different room. Visual separation does most of the work.
- A birthday cake that isn't festive — Not gingerbread, not a yule log. Whatever their favourite is, in whatever colour they choose.
- A celebration on a different day — If their birthday falls in the Christmas cluster, moving the party a week either side gives it its own space and better attendance.
- A "birthday only" tradition — A specific breakfast, a specific outing, something that happens on the birthday and never at Christmas.
Gifts with their name on them
- A personalised item with their birth date — Explicitly their date. The point is the distinction.
- A name puzzle or height chart — Birthday-coded rather than season-coded.
- A birthday interview book — The same questions every year on their birthday. Ours is in the free printable pack, and it becomes a record.
- A photo book of their year — Birthday-to-birthday, not calendar year. Reinforces that their year runs on its own clock.
For the "everything at once" problem
- Ask relatives to give birthday gifts at the birthday, and Christmas gifts at Christmas — Sounds obvious. It is the single most useful conversation to have, and most relatives are glad to be told.
- A "half birthday" in June — For December kids especially, a small half-birthday in summer breaks up the year. More on that in our half birthday ideas.
- A savings contribution instead of a fourth toy — When the pile is already large, this is the gift that isn't more stuff.
- One big joint gift, agreed in advance — Different from a combined birthday-and-Christmas present: this is several people going in on one thing they actually want, still given as a birthday gift.
The rule that matters most
Never give a combined "birthday and Christmas" present. It's the one thing December-born adults consistently mention, and it costs nothing to avoid — two smaller gifts, given on two occasions, in two kinds of wrapping paper, beats one larger combined gift every time.
The child isn't counting the money. They're counting whether the birthday happened.

Frequently asked questions
Separate it visibly. Non-Christmas wrapping paper, birthday decorations rather than festive ones, and a celebration on a different day from any Christmas gathering. The complaint from December-born kids is almost never about the number of presents — it's about the birthday being folded into the holiday.
