"Wise" is one of the meanings people most want and least often find, because the names that carry it tend to hide it. Nobody hears Conrad or Raymond and thinks "counsel" — but that's exactly what they mean.

Seventy below, split between the ones that carry the meaning quietly and the ones that say it out loud. Both are legitimate; they're just different decisions.

Carry it quietly — you'd never know

  1. Conrad — Germanic, "bold counsel." Solid, slightly formal, never really out of use.
  2. Raymond — "Wise protector." Ray for daily life.
  3. Alfred — "Elf counsel." Alfie is why it works at three; Alfred is why it works at forty.
  4. Hugo — "Mind, intellect." Short, European, currently rising.
  5. Alden — "Old, wise friend." Surname-style and quietly excellent.
  6. Albert — "Noble, bright." Bertie does the daily work.
  7. Ethan — "Firm, strong" — but in tradition, a wise man of Solomon's court.
  8. Solomon — Hebrew, "peace." The name is the byword for wisdom itself. Sol.
  9. Reginald — "Counsel-power." Reggie is fully rehabilitated.
  10. Ronald — "Ruler's counsel." Overdue.
  11. Rainer — "Wise army." German, distinctive.
  12. Conroy — "Wise advisor." Irish, rare.
  13. Frode — Norse, "wise, learned." Very unusual, entirely usable.
  14. Kendrick — "Bold power," often read as royal wisdom. Ken.
  15. Aldo — Italian, "old, wise."
  16. Elden / Eldon — "Old, wise" via Old English.
  17. Alvis — Norse, "all-wise." Rare and striking.
  18. Bertrand — "Bright raven," the raven being the wise bird.
  19. Boden — "Messenger, herald," read as bringer of wisdom.
  20. Ralph — "Wolf counsel." Blunt and old and good.

Say it out loud

  1. Sage — Literally wise. Used both ways; leans masculine now.
  2. Cato — Latin, "wise, all-knowing." Two syllables of Roman seriousness.
  3. Sophus — Greek, "wise." The masculine root of Sophia.
  4. Akira — Japanese, "bright, intelligent." Used for both.
  5. Hakim — Arabic, "wise, judicious."
  6. Rashid — Arabic, "rightly guided."
  7. Aqil — Arabic, "intelligent."
  8. Kavi — Sanskrit, "poet, wise one."

  10. Prudencio — Spanish, "prudent."
  11. Sapient — A word, occasionally a name. Bold.
  12. Nestor — Greek, the wise old counsellor of the Iliad.
  13. Mentor — Greek. The name is where the word came from.
  14. Solon — Greek, the lawgiver. Rare, very handsome.
  15. Thales — Greek, the first philosopher.

Learned, scholarly, thoughtful

  1. Lear — "Learned." Sharp, one large literary shadow.
  2. Clement — "Merciful, mild" — the wise temperament rather than the word.
  3. Ptolemy — Greek, "warlike," but borne by the astronomer.
  4. Erasmus — "Beloved," borne by the humanist.
  5. Galen — "Calm." The physician.
  6. Linus — Greek; a scholar in early Christian tradition.

Nature names read as wise

Short and modern

  1. Sol — Short for Solomon.
  2. Ray — Short for Raymond.
  3. Al — Short for Alfred or Albert.
  4. Kai — Hawaiian "sea," Japanese "forgiveness" — often read as wise in name lists, honestly on thin grounds.
  5. Reid — "Red-haired," but read as scholarly by sound alone.
  6. Cal — Short for Calloway or Calvin.
  7. Hugh — The English Hugo. "Mind."
  8. Ike — Short for Isaac, "he laughs."
  9. Wes — Short for Wesley.
  10. Bram — Short for Abraham, "father of many."

The honest note

Two of the names above genuinely say "wise" in the room: Sage and Solomon. Both are excellent and both will be commented on.

Everything else carries the meaning without announcing it — which, for most parents, is the point. If you want the meaning and not the conversation, Conrad, Raymond, Alfred and Hugo are the strongest of that kind.

More meaning lists: 70 boy names that mean king, 80 boy names that mean light, and boy names that mean brave.

Frequently asked questions

Alden (old, wise friend), Conrad (wise counsel), Raymond (wise protector), Hugo (mind, intellect), Solomon (peace, but the byword for wisdom), Sage (literally wise) and Alvis (all-wise) all carry it directly. Conrad and Raymond do it most quietly.
