Baby's hands playing with colourful toy cubes and blocks

Eighteen months is an awkward gap. The baby toys are boring now, but crafts, rules and pretend play haven't arrived yet. What you have instead is a walking, climbing person who wants to carry things around and put objects inside other objects.

That's the whole brief, and these twelve ideas work with it rather than against it. Nothing here needs more than a minute of setup, and most of it is already in your kitchen.

Carry, push, climb

  1. Push the laundry basket — Weight it with books and let them push it around the room. New walkers find this endlessly satisfying.
  2. Carrying jobs — Hand them something to deliver: a nappy to the bin, a spoon to the table, a shoe to the door. At this age "helping" is a genuine activity.
  3. Cushion mountain — Sofa cushions on the floor to climb over and fall onto. Climbing is a compulsion at eighteen months; better here than the bookshelf.
  4. Tunnel crawl — A large open cardboard box or a pop-up tunnel. Crawl through, get cheered, repeat.
  5. Stair practice (gated and supervised) — Up and down with you right there. Genuinely tiring for them, and useful.

Fill, dump, post

  1. Container transfer — Two bowls and a handful of large blocks or big pasta. Move them from one to the other, then back. The core game of this whole age.
  2. Posting box — A slot cut in a shoebox lid, plus old cards or plastic lids. Posting is deeply compelling right now.
  3. Muffin tin and pompoms — Fill each cup, tip them out, fill again. (Supervise closely, and size up the pieces if everything still goes in the mouth.)
  4. Wipes-tub pull-through — Fabric scraps or scarves stuffed into an empty wipes tub for endless pulling out.

First creative and calm

  1. Chunky crayons on big paper — First scribbles. Tape the paper down so it doesn't slide away and end the activity early.
  2. Water play in a shallow tray — A little water, a couple of cups, a towel underneath. Always within arm's reach — even an inch of water needs constant supervision at this age.
  3. Naming things together — Carry them around the house naming what you touch: cold window, soft blanket, red cup. It's the highest-value thing on this list and it costs nothing.

What's normal at eighteen months

Short attention spans, constant motion, and a strong preference for doing whatever you're doing. Setting out two or three of these and letting them cycle between all of them is a better plan than hoping one holds for half an hour.

The other thing worth knowing: at this age you're usually part of the activity. Sitting on the floor and joining in reliably doubles how long anything lasts — which is either good news or bad news depending on how much coffee you've had.

Coming up on two? 27 zero-prep activities for 2-year-olds is the next step up. Just behind? Activities for 1-year-olds covers the earlier end.

Frequently asked questions

Eighteen months is the walking-and-carrying stage: pushing things, filling and emptying containers, posting objects into slots, scribbling, and climbing whatever is available. Keep it physical and repetitive — they're not ready for crafts or rules yet.
